Hurricane Rowing Splits with Clemson
March 21, 2004
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami rowing team won three of six races against future ACC rival Clemson Sunday, taking first place in the Junior Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+ and the Junior Varsity 4+ on the waters of Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
Sunday’s action began with the Tigers’ Varsity 8+ coming from behind after trailing in the first 1000 meters to down the Hurricanes with a time of 7:22.8.
In one of the day’s closest races, Miami’s Junior Varsity 8+ fought back down the last 500 meters of the course to edge out Clemson by just six tenths of a second, finishing with a time of 7:46.9, keeping the Junior Varsity 8+ crew’s undefeated streak on the year alive.
In Varsity 4+, Clemson’s A team distanced itself from the pack, winning with a time of 8:30.5 as the Hurricanes’ A boat held off a charging surge from the Tigers’ B crew to finish second with a time of 8:36.5.
The Hurricanes would blow past Clemson in an additional Varsity 4+ event, cruising past the Tigers by nearly 25 seconds with a time of 9:14.5.
In the final race of the day, Clemson’s Junior Varsity 4+ boat jumped out to an early lead before Miami mounted an attack to finish 11 seconds ahead of the Tigers with a time of 9:35.2.
“I thought today was a giant step towards our ultimate goal of becoming one of the nation’s top-20 programs,” Head Coach Debra Morgan said. “Last spring, Clemson beat us in every event so for us to win three out of six today shows our program’s progress in that direction.”
The Hurricanes return to the water April 3-4, taking part in the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego, Calif.
