No. 15 Miami Finishes Third at Orlando Invitational
ORLANDO, Fla. – The 15th-ranked Miami Hurricanes rowing team put together a strong showing to close out the final day of racing at the inaugural Orlando Invitational on Saturday.
The Hurricanes had a trio of third place finishes in the regatta’s Grand Finals and finished third overall behind only No. 11 UCF and No. 14 Duke in the eight-team field which featured six programs ranked in the most recent CRCA Top 25 Coaches Poll.
A day after setting a new program record in qualifying, Miami’s 1V8 crew of Scarlett Pringle, Naroa Zubimendi Varela, Jovana Stanivuk, Samantha Premerl, Mallory Sullivan, Esther Fuerte Chacón, Candela Martínez Pernas, Maria Sole Perugino and Beatrice Ravini Perelli posted a time of 6:28.6 in its Grand Final, beating No. 13 Alabama and No. 24 Oklahoma across the finish line.
The Hurricanes’ 2V8 crew of Anna Langemann, Paula Espinosa Linares, Felipa Rosas Villalobos, Sara Caterisano, Agostina Manzotti Scolari, Kylie Evenson, Jane Elsner, Camila Cofré Lopez and Gabriela Snopková also posted a third-place finish with a time of 6:45.4 that beat both No. 19 Penn and No. 14 Duke.
Miami’s 2V4, which features the crew of Gabrielle Walsh, Nicole Wyszynski, Holly Prichard, Isabella Raemisch, and Krista Jackson, also had a strong race Saturday, posting a time of 7.27.5 to finish ahead of Duke and Oklahoma and just nearly catch UCF at the finish line.
“This was a fast and competitive regatta from top to bottom. I think we demonstrated that we are a much-improved team this spring and we are proud of how each crew attacked their races,” head coach James Mulcahy said. “A strength of this team is that they work very diligently to improve from race to race. Sometimes that leads to better results, and sometimes we falter. Today, we didn’t quite execute everything we wanted to, but we were fortunate to finish third overall and beat our initial seeding of fourth.
“Congratulations to UCF for winning the regatta and we are so grateful to Coach [Mara] Allen, her staff, and the UCF events team for putting on a championship-format regatta in the middle of the season. It was valuable for our athletes to experience the necessity of going all-out in Day 1’s heats to make the final, then using 24 hours to recover before going out and trying to do better on Day 2 in the final. It’s great prep work for the ACC [Championship] next month. We’ll now look forward to recovering this week and being ready to take another step forward next weekend in Raleigh at the Lake Wheeler Invite.”
Miami returns to competition Friday and Saturday in North Carolina at the Lake Wheeler Invitational.
