UM Downs Manhattan in Season Opener

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami (1-0) defeated Manhattan (0-1) in three games, 30-23, 30-18, 30-25, in the first match of the season at the Hurricane Invitational on Friday, Aug. 29, 2003 at the Knight Sports Complex.
The Hurricanes posted a .415 attack percentage on 106 total attack attempts to sweep the Jaspers in three games.
Sophomore setter Margie Young played a major role in the Hurricanes victory. Filling in for Preseason All-BIG EAST first-team selection Mallorey James, who saw limited time due to injury, Young recorded 37 assists along with two service aces in the three games.
Junior Biz Tyson and senior Leyre Santaella Sante also contributed from the outside hitter position. Tyson totaled 12 kills and Santaella Sante posted a .529 hitting percentage with 10 kills to push the Hurricanes to victory.
The Hurricanes will return to action at the Hurricane Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 30 to face Kent State at noon and Indiana at 7 p.m. at the Knight Sports Complex. The Hurricanes match with Indiana will be broadcast on WVUM-90.5 FM.
Indiana downed Kent State, 3-2, in five games in the opener of the Hurricane Invitational.
