UM Varsity Eight Takes Win

UM Varsity Eight Takes Win

April 13, 2003

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – – The University of Miami rowing team’s varsity-eight squad outpaced Cincinnati Sunday at Indian Creek in Miami Beach. The varsity eight were one of five Miami squads that took victories against the Bearcats.

Barry also put two squads in the water Sunday in the competition.

The Hurricanes finished with a time of 7:07 to the Bearcats’ 7:15 in the varsity-eight race.

“The varsity eight has been working on their starts all week and it really paid off in its race against Cincinnati,” coach Debra Morgan said. “It was the first time this season we’ve come off the line ahead of our competitor. That’s obviously a much better position to be in.”

The novice eight also took a win for UM. The “A” unit finished in 7:42.27, while the Bearcats recorded a time of 7:50.9 and the UM “B” team finished in 8:36.4. Miami’s novice-eight unit is undefeated on the season.

“They (the novice eight) have had some very solid races and are a very solid crew but need to smooth out just a bit more in the next two weeks before we travel to Worcester to compete (in the BIG EAST Championships),” Morgan said.

Among the Hurricanes’ other highlights were victories in the novice four and the varsity four. In the former event, the Hurricanes won with a time of 8:41.65 while Cincinnati finished with a time of 9:13.78 and UM “B” arrived at the finish in 9:47.18.

In the varsity-four race, the Hurricanes placed first with a time of 8:22.15. Cincinnati, after leading going into the final 500 meters, picked up some sea grass on their rudder and had to settle for a second-place finish with a time of 8:29.15. Barry finished in 8:59.45.

Cincinnati won the junior varsity eight with a time of 7:31.6, while the Hurricanes recorded a time of 7:33.09 and Barry finished in 7:56.11.

The teams raced against and incoming tide against the direction of racing. There was also a slight to mid head wind, according to coach Morgan.
