Volleyball Extends Winning-Streak To Six

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami women’s volleyball team extended its undefeated streak to 17 matches (six this season)when it swept both Oregon and Howard 3-0 on Friday, Sept. 6 at the Knight Sports Complex.
The Hurricanes did not concede a game in either of their victories.
In the win over Howard, UM was led by freshman middle blocker Karla Johnson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS), who finished with 15 kills, two digs, and two block assists while registering a .619 attack percentage. She also tallied a team-leading three block assists in the win over Oregon. Senior outside hitter Marcela Gamarra generated 14 kills in the first victory of the day and had nine digs.
In the latter triumph, sophomore outside hitter Elizabeth Tyson (Jacksonville, Fla./ Bishop Kenney HS) had 13 kills and 12 digs in the win over Oregon and freshman rightside hitter Valeria Tipiana (Lima, Peru/Cristo Rey Catholic) recorded 13 kills and 14 digs. Gamarra led the defense with 17 digs and Jamie Grass (Manhattan Beach, Calif./ Mira Costa HS) had 15.
Sophomore setter Mallorey James (Tucson, Ariz./Sal Pointe Catholic) led the Hurricanes in the Oregon match with 41 assists. Freshman Margie Young (Santa Monica, Calif./Marymount High School) had 46 assists in the victory over Howard.
UM will play Fordham Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the Knight Sports Complex on the UM campus.
