Volleyball Wins Fifth-Straight

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. – (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miamivolleyball team extended its win streak to five matches by storming past NovaSoutheastern, 3-0 (16-30, 16-30 & 21-30) on Wednesday evening in Ft. Lauderdale.
The Hurricanes (11-7) dominated the match with a commanding .417 attack percentagewhile limiting NSU (14-15) to .154. In the second game, statistically the mostimpressive to date, UM had 20 kills in 29 attacks with just two errors to scorea season-best .621 attack percentage.
Miami was once again led by junior outside hitter Marcela Gamarra (Medellin, Colombia).Gamarra scored 18 kills on 27 attacks with three errors (.556). The match markedGamarra’s most efficient outing this season, surpassing the .481 attack percentageshe engineered October 20th in a 3-0 sweep of UCF.
Four other Hurricanes had an attack percentage at or better than .400: AshleyYoungs (West Palm Beach, Fla.) with six kills on nine attacks (.667), Kristi Sprinkel(Laguna Beach, Calif.) with seven kills on 13 attacks (.462), Sandra Totten (Thermal,Calif.) with 11 kills on 17 attacks (.412) and Elizabeth Tyson (Jacksonville,Fla.) with two kills on five attacks (.400).
Defensively, freshman setter Jamie Grass (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had 40 assistsand 10 digs.
Miami also scored a season-high 13 serving aces with senior Kristi Sprinkel sneakingsix in.
The Hurricanes improve to 3-6 on the road and returnt to Coral Gables to begina five-match home stand. Miami hosts BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh at the Knight Complexon Saturday evening, October 27, at 7 p.m.
