Miami Ups Home Record to 5-1 With Win Over Tulsa

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami evened its recordat 7-7 by sweeping Tulsa, 3-0 (30-15, 30-15 & 30-20) Thursday evening at the KnightSports Complex on the UM campus.
The Hurricanes upped their home record to 5-1 with the victory. Tulsa falls to6-8.
Freshman Valeria Tipiana (Lima, Peru) scored four consecutive service points tobegin the match for Miami. The Hurricanes opened up a double-digit lead and freshmanoutside hitter Elizabeth Tyson (Jacksonville, Fla.) put the game away 30-15 witha quick kill.
Tyson would finish the evening with nine kills on 14 attempts andone error for a team-high .571 attack percentage.
Senior middle blocker Kristi Sprinkel (Laguna Beach, Calif.) scored seven consecutiveservice points to begin game two giving the Hurricanes a 7-0 lead. Tulsa respondedwith a seven-point scoring run of their own to tie the game 7-7. TU then committedthree straight ball handling errors and Miami capitalized, stretching its leadto 25-14.
After a Tulsa timeout, the Hurricanes went on a 5-1 run to take game two, 30-15.
Miami opened up a 27-18 lead in the final game on a blistering kill by junioroutside hitter Marcela Gamarra (Medellin, Colombia). Gamarra finished the nightwith 14 kills on 32 attempts and three errors (.344).
“I thought we played a great match tonight,” said head coach Nicole Lantagne.”We’ve really worked hard this week in practice and the things we worked on reflectedin our performance. It was great to see a complete team effort.”
Sprinkel contributed five total blocks in the match (one solo) to up her team-highblock total to 49 (nine solo) for the season.
For Tulsa, freshman Kristin Bailey (Centennial, Colo.) had a team-high nine killson 28 attempts with three errors (.214). Freshman setter Vanessa Thon (Houston,Texas) contributed 24 assists, 10 digs and three kills.
Miami returns to action on campus against St. Johns on Wednesday, October 17that 7:00 p.m. The home match will be broadcast live by WVUM radio 90.5 FM.
