Miami Volleyball Drops Match to Undefeated FAMU, 0-3

Tallahassee, Fla. – (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami lost a physical matchto undefeated Florida A&M, 0-3 (25-30, 24-30 & 19-30) Monday night atGaither Gym on the FAMU campus in Tallahassee.
The Hurricanes fall to 6-5 overall and 1-3 in away matches while Florida A&Mextends its unbeaten streak to 10. The Rattlerettes have won 30 of 35 games overthose 10 matches. Florida A&M is one of just three Division 1 programs (OhioState and Long Beach State) that remain undefeated for the 2001 season.
Although Miami outshot FAMU 117 to 100, Florida A&M was more efficient inscoring kills (.309 to .197). The Rattlerettes had seven team blocks to the Hurricanes’four and recorded nine serving aces to Miami’s four.
Freshman outside hitter Jamie Grass (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and junior outsidehitter Marcela Gamarra (Medellin, Colombia) provided the bulk of the offense forthe Hurricanes. Grass finished the match with 11 kills on 36 attacks (.250) whileGamarra had 12 kills on 29 attacks (.207).
Senior middle blocker Kristi Sprinkel (Laguna Beach, Calif.) recorded three blocksand four digs while freshman outside hitter Valeria Tipiana (Lima, Peru) and Grasshad nine digs each. Freshman setter Mallorey James (Tucson, Ariz.) contributed30 assists and five kills.
Florida A&M was led by junior outside hitter Fiorella Aita Junek (Lima, Peru)with 16 kills on 35 attempts (.343) and senior middle blocker Shante Haymore (Miami,Fla.) with 15 kills on 28 attempts (.429).
UM remains in Tallahassee to battle rival Florida State on Tuesday night at 7:30p.m. The UM-FSU match will be televised regionally by the Sunshine Network (Channel39 in Miami).
The Hurricanes play at Florida International on Friday, October 5th, to completea four-match road swing. The UM-FIU match was rescheduled in the wake of the terroristattacks on September 11th.
Miami’s next home contest is against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Thursday, October11th, at 7 p.m.
