Miami Falls to UAB in Hurricane Invitational, 3-2

Coral Gables, Fla. – (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami lost its final matchof the Hurricane Invitational to UAB, 2-3 (30-14, 30-18, 17-30, 26-30 & 13-15).
The Hurricanes (3-3) appeared to have the match in hand early. After winning thefirst game 30-14, Miami surged to a 30-18 win in the second with junior MarcellaGamarra (Medellin, Colombia) scoring seven consecutive service points.
UAB (6-1) rallied in the third game as eventual Hurricane Invitational MVP KristiLee scored seven kills on 12 attacks. The Blazers took game three, 17-30.
Miami couldn’t put the match away in the fourth game either. UAB won 26-30 toforce the fifth and deciding game.
In the final match, Miami had 21 attacks but scored only five times for a .047attack percentage while UAB scored seven kills on 13 attacks (.384). The Blazerstook the game, 13-15 and the match 3-2. It was Miami’s first home loss.
Marcella Gamarra and Sandra Totten (Thermal, CA) were named to the All-Tournamentteam.
In the final match of the Hurricane Invitational, Wofford defeated Long Island,3-0 (30-26, 30-24 & 30-24).
Tournament champion UAB placed three players on the All-Tournament team includingfreshman middle blocker Karen Boyd (Toy, IL), senior middle blocker Shelly Greene(Bend, OR) and Tournament MVP sophomore middle blocker Kristi Lee (Birmingham,AL).
Wofford’s sophomore outside hitter Andrea Duke was also named to the HurricaneInvitational All-Tournament team.
Miami next plays in the FIU Tournament September 14 and 15th. On Friday, the 14th,The Hurricanes play IUPUI at 1 p.m and FIU at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Miami playsValparaiso at 1 p.m. and Boston College at 5 p.m. Miami begins play in the BIGEAST next season.
