Women's Crew Highlight Head Of The Creek Regatta

Miami Beach, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami varsity women nearly swept all the races it entered, placing first in three of four races, at the season opening Head of the Creek Regatta on the Indian Creek waterway in Miami Beach.

The UM men also recorded success in its season-opener, with first-place trophies in all three races it was entered in.

Highlighting the days’ races was the Miami championship four entries, which placed first (“B” boat) and second (“A” boat) with times of 17:52:72 and 18:03:31, respectively. The University of Central Florida, UM’s top in-state rival, placed third (20:11:07).

The UM championship four “B” entry consisted of Sheila Cornelius, Jenny Krawec, Jacqui Julien, Bridgett Gallagher and coxswain Jenny Lee. The second-place “A” entry was rowed by Cathy Dunnet, Monica Manios, Amanda Turner, Dorien ten Have and coxswain Meg Venezia.

In the championship eight race, the Regatta’s premiere event, both Miami’s “A” and “B” entries were docked a 30-second penalty for reaching the starting late. Both Miami boats still put up the two fastest times in the race, but with the penalty were relegated to second and third place behind Central Florida (17:00:02).

Miami’s championship eight “A” boat, featuring Dunnet, Cornelius, Turner, Manios, Krawec, ten Have, Gallagher, Julien and Lee (Cox), finished with a time of 17:20:97. The championship eight “B” entry, featuring Yianna Reizakis, Ansley McGarrity, Kate Weeden, Marijka VanderPol, Ananda Chou, Trisha Blackwell, Jordanna Heywood, Ruza Rebac and Venezia (Cox), recorded a time of 17:28:35. Barry took fourth with a time 17:42:37.

Miami’s “B” and “A” club eight entries swept first and second place, with times of 16:27:87 and 17:11:57, respectively. Barry placed third to round out the medallists ahead of fourth-place UCF and fifth-place Miami Beach Rowing Club.

Lindsey Tarabula, Nita Rench, Stephanie Tilley, Caroline Stuart, Bernadette Lack, Dorothy Clay, Maggie Knuth, Sara Grossman and Lauren Walker (Cox) rowed the club eight “B” entry. Reizakis, McGarrity, Weeden, VanderPol, Chou, Blackwell, Heywood, Rebac and Cina Quezada (Cox) rowed the club eight “A” entry.

In the women’s club fours, the UM “A” entry grabbed first with a time of 20:08:51, ahead of UCF (20:25:33) and UM “B” 20:50:42. Additionally, both UM entries received 30-second delay penalties for not reaching the starting buoy on time.

Rench, Tilley, Stuart, Tarabula and Walker (Cox) rowed the club “A” entry, while Lack, Clay, Knuth, Grossman and Quezada (Cox) handled the “B” entry.

On the men’s side, the UM men won the championship eight race over the Miami Rowing Club with a time of 15:40:06. The championship four finished ahead of the Space Coast and Miami Rowing Clubs with a time of 16:43:59. The club eight won its race with a time of 16:01:61.

Assistant varsity women’s coach Melanie Borger placed second in the Master’s Single race with a time of 20:26:05, behind the Barry University entry.
