UM Boats Set For Head Of The Creek Regatta

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Highlighting the Head of the Creek Regatta’s races will be the two University of Miami championship eight entries set to race at noon on the Indian Creek waterway in Miami Beach.

The “A” boat features veteran rowers Cathy Dunnet (8), Mandy Turner (6), Monica Manios (5) and third-year coxswain Jenny Lee, plus newcomers Sheila Cornelius (7), Jenny Krawec (4), Dorien ten Have (3), Bridgett Gallagher (2) and Jacqui Julien (B).

The “B” boat entry consists of veterans Yianna Reizakis (8), Kate Weeden (6), Marijka VanderPol (5) and coxswain Meg Venezia, plus varsity newcomers Ansley McGarrity (7), Ananda Chou (4), Trisha Blackwell (3), Jordanna Heywood (2) and Ruza Rebac (B).

Miami’s championship four boats will be Dunnett (4), Manios (3), Turner (2), ten Have (B) and Venezia (Cox)in the “A”, with Cornelius (4), Krawec (3), Julien (2), Gallagher (B) and Lee (Cox) in the “B”.

Reizakis (8), McGarrity (7), Weeden (6), VanderPol (5), Chou (4), Blackwell (3), Heywood (2), Rebac (B) and Cina Quezada (Cox) will row the club eight “A” entry. Lindsey Tarabula (8), Nita Rench (7), Stephanie Tilley (6), Caroline Stuart (5), Bernadette Lack (4), Dorothy Clay (3), Maggie Knuth (2), Sara Grossman (B) and Lauren Walker (Cox) will row the club eight “B” entry.

Rench (4), Tilley (3), Stuart (2), Tarabula (B) and Walker (Cox) will row the club “A” entry, while Lack (4), Clay (3), Knuth (2), Grossman (B) and Quezada (Cox) will handle the “B” entry.

The eighth annual Head of the Creek Regatta will take place on Sunday, October 15 at Indian Creek near the UM Boathouse at the Shane Watersports Complex on Miami Beach.

Joining the Hurricanes at the Head of the Creek are Central Florida and Barry, plus an assortment of rowing clubs from around the state.

Last season, the varsity women recorded the fastest times of the day in each of the events against a field of South Florida rowing clubs and schools. The two varsity women’s eights that raced recorded times of 16:07.45 and 16:37.69 on the 2,000-meter course, respectively. The varsity women’s four recorded a time of 17:40.9, ahead of Barry University’s 18:05.13 to place first. In the women’s club eight race, the UM “A” boat recorded the top time at 15:50.34, while the UM “B” boat finished a close second at 15:56.06.

The Regatta’s racing begins at 8 a.m. and concludes at 1 p.m. with an awards ceremony. The Shane Watersports Complex is located off 6500 Indian Creek Drive, just north of the 63rd street bridge in Miami Beach. The finish line will be at Brittany Bay Park, located on the creek side of Indian Creek Drive just before 65th street.
