Compliance Tip Of The Week

Voluntary Strength and Conditioning

It is not permissible for an institution’s coach to mandate a student-athlete’s involvement in such activities or in any particular activity that a student-athlete engages in as part of his or her voluntary conditioning program. Any supervision, monitoring or assistance provided by the strength and conditioning coach must be for safety purposes. It is not permissible for the strength and conditioning coach to conduct actual workouts.

Past Tips of the Week

Limitations on Time for Practice, Athletically Related Activities, and Competition

During the playing season the student-athlete’s participation in required practice, athletically related activities, and competition is limited to four hours per day and 20 hours per week. In addition, all required activities shall be prohibited during one day per week, giving the student-athlete one day of rest.

Telephone Calls to Prospects

The general rule for telephone calls to prospects is that a telephone call may not be made prior to July 1st following the completion of the prospect’s junior year in high school. Thereafter, no more than one telephone call per week to a prospect is permissible. The only permissible callers are institutional staff members. Representatives of athletic interests (boosters), enrolled students, or student-athletes are not permitted to call a prospect.

Student-Athlete Employment

A student-athlete who has spent an academic year at the University of Miami is permitted to receive earnings from legitimate on- or off- campus employment during the academic year. The earnings in combination with the student-athlete’s financial aid are limited to $2000.00 above the value of a full grant (tuition, fees, room and board, and books). The student-athletes must be academically eligible to compete.

For the on- or off- campus employment to be considered legitimate it must provide compensation for work actually performed, compensation must be at the going rate in the locality for similar services, and can not be based on athletic reputation.

Any student-athlete wishing to work must fill out the appropriate paper work with the Compliance Office.
