Miami Announces Its Class Of 2000 Hall Of Fame Inductees

CORAL GABLES, FL – The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame announces its inductees for 2000. The six new inductees are: Ronnie Reis-Bernstein (tennis), Mike Fiore (baseball), John Hammill (tennis), Bill Hawkins (football), Michael Irvin (football), and William Wrona (baseball).
The University of Miami will induct its six new members into its Sports Hall of Fame at the 32nd Annual Hall of Fame Banquet on Thursday, February 24, at 6:00p.m. The ceremony will take place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 400 SE 2nd Avenue in Miami.

Following is a brief background on each of the inductees:
Ronnie Reis-Bernstein – Tennis (1985-88) – Earned an amazing eight NCAA All-America honors for her singles and doubles play…won the NCAA doubles championship in 1986 with teammate and 1999 Hall of Fame Inductee Lise Gregory, as they finished the year undefeated at 29-0…together, the tandem compiled an impressive 84-10 record over three years…was consistently ranked among the nation’s top five singles and doubles players during her years at UM…hired as the Head Women’s Tennis Coach at Florida International in 1997, after serving as an assistant from 1995-97…attended Miami Sunset High in Miami, FL.
Mike Fiore – Baseball (1985-88) – Outfielder who hit .360 in 270 career games for UM…earned Baseball America Freshman All-America honors batting .330 with 46 RBI’s and 11 doubles…named to the 1986 All-College World Series Team as he batted .357 with 5 RBI’s and 2 doubles in 5 games…was a first-team All-America by Baseball America and the American Baseball Coaches Association in 1988 as he hit .360 with 83 RBI’s and 15 home runs…holds Hurricane records for: at bats (946), hits (341), runs scored (258), total bases (506), RBI’s (235), walks (222), and consecutive hits (9)…drafted in the 1988 Major League Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.
John Hammill – Tennis – Prominent player and coach at the University of Miami…during his playing days (1961-64) he helped Miami to the longest winning streak in men’s intercollegiate tennis history with 137 straight victories…led Miami to successive fourth-place finishes at the NCAA Championships in 1962 and 1963…in 1963 he earned All-American honors in both singles and doubles…as the Hurricane’s Head Coach from 1980-1995 he complied a 269-128 record and qualified for the NCAA tournament 13 times…coached UM’s first four-time All-American Johan Donar, two-time All-American Christo Steyn, and 1987 NCAA singles Champion and All-American Andrew Burrow.
Bill Hawkins – Football (1985-1988) – Defensive End who earned first-team All-America honors from ESPN, KODAK, and the Walter Camp Football Foundation, while receiving second-team recognition from The Football News and the Associated Press in 1988 when he recorded 67 tackles and 8.5 sacks…ranked fifth on the team in tackles with 84 and third in sacks with 6.5 in 1987…recorded 62 tackles and 7 sacks in 1986 in his first full year as a starter…ranks sixth on Miami’s All-time sack list with 22…finished his career with 223 tackles, 98 solo, 19 tackles for a loss, 4 fumble recoveries and 1 forced fumble.
Michael Irvin – Football (1985-1987) – Wide Receiver who won Freshman All-America honors from the Football News in 1985, UPI All-America honors in 1986, and 2nd team and honorable mention All-America honors by The Football News and the Associated Press as a junior in 1987…became a starter in his red-shirt freshman year in 1985…holds UM career records for receiving yards (2,423) and touchdown receptions (26)…is also second in receptions (143) and fourth in touchdowns (26)…drafted in the 1988 NFL draft by the Dallas Cowboys with the 11th selection in the first round, went on star for the Cowboys and win three Super Bowl Titles.
William Wrona – Baseball (1981-1983) – Played shortstop on Miami’s 1982 National Championship Team, batting .303 with 60 RBI’s, 13 doubles, and 38 steals, while maintaining a .966 fielding percentage…finished career with a 301 batting average and 243 hits…ranks among the Hurricane’s career top ten in: at bats (801, 6th), hits (243, 4th), runs scored (173, 8th), triples (15, 2nd), total bases (333, 10th), stolen bases (95, 8th), and sacrifices (31, 8th)…signed as a free-agent by the Seattle Mariners in July of 1983.
