Volleyball Announces Dig Pink Results
Dec. 11, 2009
Coral Gables, Fla. – Nicole Lantagne Welch, just completing her ninth season at the helm of the University of Miami volleyball program, officially announced the final money count Friday morning for this year’s UM fundraising initiative in the Dig Pink program to support breast cancer research and awareness. Overall, the `Canes raised a total of $4,312 in this year’s event.
Miami participated in this year’s Dig Pink initiative when playing host to North Carolina on October 23. In conjunction with the athletic department, the volleyball program held a raffle where a fan took home a Victoria’s Secret PINK gift basket.
Originally setting a goal of $3,000 when signing up to participate in this year’s event, Miami shattered that total before the match ever took place. The `Canes volleyball program also created a website where fans and friends of the UM volleyball program could donate money for continued research of breast cancer. The website was created in conjunction with the Side-Out Foundation.
“I’m extremely proud of our team and the efforts they showed to raise money toward breast cancer research,” commented Lantagne Welch. “To exceed our goal by over $1,000 is just amazing, and it shows clearly how special every member of this team is.”
Against the Tar Heels, the Hurricanes volleyball team wore pink ribbons in their hair, as well as pink playing shoes with pink warm-up shirts prior to the start of the match. The UM cheerleading squad donned pink pom-poms and the `Canes threw out pink volleyballs, along with Sebastian the Ibis, before and during the match.
Dig Pink was a Breast Cancer Awareness Rally held the entire month of October to raise awareness and funds. Every year they want to make a statement by holding hundreds, potentially thousands, of featured high school and college matches across the country to help educate and raise funds to eradicate this terrible disease. All proceeds went towards doing something significant and identifiable in the fight against breast cancer.
“As many of us have already experienced family or friends fighting cancer, this is an important way to do our part to make sure research and solutions will improve for the future,” added Lantagne Welch.
