Former UM Player Earns AVP Main Draw Qualification

Coral Gables, Fla. – Former University of Miami volleyball player Marcela Gamarra earned a trip to the main draw of the AVP event during the Ft. Lauderdale Open which was held Apr. 10-11 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The event was an open tournament as part of the AVP Qualifier Tour.
Gamarra, who played for Miami from 2001-02, teamed with Kendra Van Zwieten to advance to the main draw of the event.
After receiving a bye in the opening round, Gamarra and Van Zwieten took down the team of Rebecca Smith and Heidi Ford by a score of 21-16 and 21-18 in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Gamarra and Van Zwieten fell to Dana Fiume and Shayna Munson, 21-18 and 21-19.
Fiume and Munson won their next match to advance to the semifinals, before falling to the eventual championship team of Brooke Sweat and Kristen Batt. The winners advanced to the Ft. Lauderdale Open a week later with some of the nation’s finest players in attendance.
Gamarra is eighth all-time at UM for career kills, owning 845 in just two seasons for the `Canes. She is also third in attack percentage (.306), sixth in service aces (60), sixth in service aces per set (0.30), eighth in points (965.5) and eighth in total attempts (1,993). Defensively, Gamarra is fifth in digs per set (2.73).
