Carico/Ellis Spur Miami Past Boston College, 3-0

Coral Gables, Fla. – Spurred by nine kills from Lane Carico and eight by Angelica Ellis, the University of Miami posted a season-high .416 hitting percentage en route to a 3-0 win (25-13, 25-14, 25-14) over Boston College on Friday night in an ACC volleyball matchup at the James L. Knight Sports Complex in Coral Gables, Fla.
Miami (16-2, 4-2 ACC) eclipsed the .400 hitting mark for the first time since Sept. 18, 2004 when they set the school record (.431) in a 3-0 win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Hurricanes pounded down 35 kills while having just three errors on 77 swings Friday night. With just three errors total, the Hurricanes set a new school record with the lowest amount of errors committed in a single match.
After winning the first set, 25-13, the Hurricanes rolled off 11 consecutive points to start the second set behind the serve of outside hitter Genny Mayhew. However, nine of those points for UM came from set errors and attack errors charged to the Eagles of BC.
Boston College (6-12, 0-6 ACC) would eventually end the run for the `Canes and start a run of their own.
Taylor Williams served out six straight points for BC to bring the visitors from Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts to within 11-6. In the run, Williams registered three service aces and a kill to help her own cause.
UM would eventually call timeout and regroup as Ellis posted a service and Mayhew a kill to put the `Canes back up at 18-9.
Four straight points by UM closed out the set as the Hurricanes hit .333 (9-1-24) overall during the second set.
In the third, Miami recorded their best hitting percentage, statistically, that they’ve enjoyed all season. The `Canes hit a whopping .615 (16-0-26) in the set to collect their ninth shutout of the year. They also put the clamps on the BC offense (30-20-96) to force them into becoming the 13th victim this year to be held under the .200 plateau hitting by the `Canes.
Boston College used eight kills from Jordan Meredith and seven from teammate Williams to lead the way on offense. The defense was directed by libero Brennan Clark who pulled in nine digs. Williams added three service aces and three digs for the Eagles.
Miami was paced by the play of Carico with nine kills and 11 digs, and Ellis pitched in with eight kills and a block (assisted). Katie Gallagher set-up 24 assists and Cassie Loessberg pulled in a match-high tying 11 digs on defense.
Miami’s next match will take place on Sunday back at the James L. Knight Sports Complex when they face the University of Maryland. The match will begin at 1 p.m. Boston College travels to Florida State for a 1 p.m. contest.
