Hurricanes Rowing Team Travels to Knecht Cup

April 9, 2010

Coral Gables, Fla. – The Miami rowing team will get back on the water on Sat., Apr. 10, traveling to the 10th annual Knecht Cup, hosted by Villanova University, at the Camden County Park in Cherry Hill, N.J. The races will take place on Cooper River, and will run Saturday and Sunday, with admission free to the public.

A week after opening the season as part of the Dale England Cup in Bloomington, Ind., the Hurricanes are eager to get back on the water for their next event. The Hurricanes finished fourth last weekend, and will be one of more than 50 participating teams in this year’s Knecht Cup Regatta. Over 3,000 student-athletes are expected to be a part of the 50 teams participating in this year’s regatta.

According to UM first-year head coach Andrew Carter, the Hurricanes had a good week of practice stemming from their success at the Dale England Cup. The team addressed some needs from last weekend, and is in perfect position to make a run at improved results in all areas this weekend. For Miami, this year’s participation in the Knecht Cup is the first in school history.

“This will be the first trip to the Knecht Cup Regatta for the Hurricane rowing program,” commented UM head coach Andrew Carter. “This is one of the larger events on our spring schedule, and with several rounds of racing over the two days; it will be good preparation for the South/Central Sprints format in mid-May. We have many of our rowers scheduled to race as many as six times over the two days. How our student-athletes manage that should give us good information going forward.”

Since 2001, the Knecht Cup has featured some of the best collegiate rowing in one of the biggest east coast regattas for both men and women, respectively. The schedule is set to feature more than 30 races in boats of all sizes, including Varsity Four and Varsity Eight action, as well as novice action.

In novice action for the Hurricanes, Miami will take part in the Novice Four racing. As for the Varsity action, UM will field a team in the Varsity Eight, as well as two boats in Varsity Four competition.

“We are really looking forward to a good race at the Knecht Cup,” stated UM assistant coach Marc DeRose. “There will be a lot of solid competition there. We would rather be competing in the Novice Eight, but I feel that our four will be very competitive, and they will do well.”
