Cassie Loessberg Named CVU.com Top 10 Performer

Sept. 9, 2009

Coral Gables, Fla. – Cassie Loessberg, a senior libero/defensive specialist for the University of Miami volleyball team, has been selected as a Top 10 performer this week by CVU.com (Collegiate Volleyball Update).

In addition to the Player of the Week, CVU.com is announcing selections for the Top Performers from the past week. These selections include the Player of the Week and up to 10 others. Choices consist of players who were finalists for the weekly honor and others who had exceptional individual matches. The additional selections are based on nominations and CVU.com staff criteria.

The Collegiate Volleyball Update announced Michigan junior Lexi Zimmerman as the CVU.com National Player of the Week for Aug. 31 through Sept 6.

Loessberg, a 5-foot-7 native of Sacramento, Calif., helped Miami to a 3-0 week as the `Canes took the championship trophy at the Hampton Inn & Suites Northern Colorado Tournament this past weekend in Greeley, Colo. In addition, Loessberg was selected to the All-Tournament Team, along with teammates Lane Carico and Ali Becker.

In three matches, Loessberg inched closer to the school’s all-time digs record, now needing just 72 to surpass Jamie Grass on the all-time list. Loessberg currently is second on the list with 1,550.

In Miami’s opening-round victory against Eastern Michigan, Loessberg established a new school-record for digs in a three-set match (30). She was the defensive anchor for the `Canes in the next match, pulling in 39 digs in a 3-2 victory over North Dakota State on Sept. 5. In the process, UM posted a new team school-record for digs in a match (113) against the Bison.

The University of Miami will get back to action Thursday, Sept. 10 traveling across town to face FIU in Miami. Match time is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at the U.S. Century Bank Arena on the campus of FIU.

The match is officially the beginning of the Miami/FIU Invitational splitting matches between FIU and Miami. In addition to playing FIU away from home, Miami welcomes visiting teams from Middle Tennessee State (Sept. 11) and Albany (Sept. 12) to the James L. Knight Sports Complex on the campus of UM.
