Carico, Andersson Named to All-ACC Academic Team

Greensboro, N.C. – Maria Andersson and Lane Carico of the University of Miami volleyball team have been named to the All-ACC Academic Team, announced by Commissioner John Swofford on Tues., Feb. 23, in Greensboro, N.C. To qualify for selection to the ACC All-Academic team, student-athletes must have earned a 3.0 grade-point average during the fall semester and have maintained a 3.0 GPA for their careers.

Andersson, a 5-10 outside hitter from Ängelholm, Sweden, is a marketing major at Miami. In 2009, she led the Hurricanes with 33 service aces (0.28 saps), also finishing third on the team with 218 digs. Andersson claimed 66 kills during her senior campaign, playing primarily in the back row, picking up 37 assists and 26 blocks (24 assisted) along the way.

In three years with the Hurricanes program, Andersson turned in 84 service aces – sixth-most in UM history, while ending her career ranked eighth all-time in service aces per set (0.27).

Making her second consecutive appearance on the All-ACC Academic Team is sophomore Lane Carico, a 5-11 outside hitter from Manhattan Beach, Calif. Carico, a 2009 All-ACC Team member, is currently working towards a degree in Exercise Physiology.

Carico led the ACC on the year with 506 kills (4.36 per set), swinging a .257 clip on the campaign (506k-167e-1320ta). She was second on the team in digs (402), tied for second in service aces (21) and finished fourth in total blocks (41) – collecting 32 assisted blocks.

All 12 conference schools are represented on the 2009 ACC All-Academic Volleyball Team, led by Duke with six selections, followed by Georgia Tech, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia with three picks apiece. Boston College, Florida State, Miami, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest each garnered two picks, while Clemson and NC State both had one honoree.

Florida State’s Brianna Barry, the 2009 ACC Volleyball Player of the Year and a second-team American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America, led the league with a .492 hitting percentage with 289 kills against only 42 errors in 502 total attacks last fall. Also highlighting the ACC All-Academic Volleyball Team is Duke senior outside hitter Rachael Moss. Moss is a four-time ACC All-Academic pick and led the Blue Devils and ranked fourth in the ACC with 3.36 kills per set.
