Miami's Carico Tabbed CVU.com National Player of the Week
Oct. 6, 2009
Coral Gables, Fla. – Lane Carico, a sophomore outside hitter at the University of Miami, has been named this week’s Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) National Player of the Week for Oct. 5-11. The announcement comes one day after Carico was selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week.
This is Lane Carico’s first-ever CVU.com National Player of the Week award.
Carico, a 5-foot-11 native of Manhattan Beach, Calif., shattered a school record and turned in one of the best offensive weeks in program history. She was named a CVU.com Rising Star following the 2008 season.
Over the weekend, Carico set a new school record for kills in a match with 36 coming against Clemson (Oct. 2.) on 83 attacks. Carico bested the old mark of 31 previously set by Karla Johnson (vs. Wake Forest – 10/22/05). She also set a new record at UM for points in a match, posting 37.5 against Clemson, adding a service ace and a block assists to go along with her 36 kills.
Just 48 hours later on Oct. 4 against Georgia Tech, Carico became the first player in UM history to register back-to-back 30-kill performances, picking up an even 30 in Miami’s 3-2 win. She is just the second player in UM history, joining Karla Johnson, to post two (2) 30-kill matches in the same season, as Johnson eclipsed the 30-kill plateau twice in 2005.
Her hitting percentage in the matches against Clemson and Georgia Tech stood out as well, as she topped a .300-clip in both matches. She put up a .301 (36k-11e-83ta) performance against Clemson, only to register a .306 hitting percentage (30k-8e-72ta) in the win over Georgia Tech.
Carico, the 2008 ACC and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) East Region Freshman of the Year, leads the conference in both kills (243) and kills per set (4.19). Her 36 kills against Clemson and 30 against Georgia Tech are the top-two performances in the ACC this season, and her 83 attacks against Clemson and 72 against Georgia Tech are also the two best marks in the league.
The Hurricanes will be back in action Thursday, Oct. 8 when they travel to Wake Forest for a 7 p.m. contest in Winston-Salem, N.C.
