UM Volleyball Digs Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness

Coral Gables, Fla. – With October slated as Breast Cancer Awareness month, the University of Miami volleyball team is doing its part in raising awareness by holding a `Pink’ match to raise money to support the cause when facing the University of North Carolina on Friday, Oct. 23 inside the James L. Knight Sports Complex at 7 p.m.
All fans are encouraged to wear pink when attending Friday’s match. For those who have yet to pick up their pink gear, a special Hurricanes volleyball pink t-shirt will be available for purchase at the match with all proceeds used as donations. Additionally, all fans in attendance will be eligible to enter into a raffle in which one lucky fan will win a Victoria’s Secret PINK gift basket.
The volleyball team has designed a website where fans and other interested parties can donate funds via credit card, money order or simply by mailing a personal/certified check. The website was created in conjunction with the Side-Out Foundation in the fight against breast cancer, and also gives UM fans and friends the opportunity to see just how much money was raised from the University of Miami.
Miami originally set a goal of raising $3,000 when beginning the 2009 initiative, but has since exceeded that goal as of Oct. 22. The Hurricanes are still asking for proceeds as they try and raise as much money as possible for the cure. “Participating in Dig Pink is special because it’s an incredible opportunity for us to reach out to the community in trying to fight, and find a cure, in a huge cause [breast cancer awareness] against a disease that affects so many people,” remarked UM head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch.
Dig Pink is a Breast Cancer Awareness Rally being held the entire month of October to raise awareness and funds. Every year they want to make a statement by holding hundreds, potentially thousands, of featured high school and college matches across the country to help educate and raise funds to eradicate this terrible disease. Proceeds will go towards doing something significant and identifiable in the fight against breast cancer.
“I believe it started with just a couple of schools, and then one conference, and ultimately several schools and conferences,” expressed Lantagne Welch. “Now under Dig Pink, we’re combining universities, colleges and high schools, and everyone is showing efforts to try and find a cure for breast cancer.”
