Coral Gables, Fla. – University of Miami student-athletes Maria Andersson and Lane Carico were named Thursday to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team (University Division) for women’s volleyball in District III.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team is voted upon by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).

Andersson and Carico are collecting their first ESPN The Magazine Academic awards, while the teams are comprised of first- and second teams on both the university and college division throughout eight districts.

Maria Andersson, a junior in the classroom, is representing the Hurricanes as a senior on the court in 2009. The Ängelholm, Sweden native currently holds a cumulative grade point average of 3.68 while working towards a degree in Marketing.

She leads the Hurricanes in service aces on the campaign with 28, ranking her ninth in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). With one of the most powerful jump-serves in the conference, Andersson has served up a total of 79 aces throughout her career in Coral Gables–ranking her sixth all-time in the UM history books.

Lane Carico, a sophomore from Manhattan Beach, Calif., already owns a number of athletic awards and honors in just her second year at UM. However, she now collects her first All-District academic award. Carico owns a 3.60 grade point average while working towards a degree in Exercise Physiology.

The reigning ACC and AVCA East Region Freshman of the Year from 2008, Carico leads the league in kills (382) while ranking 16th nationally. She has also claimed both of the league’s 30-kill matches on the year, and set a new school record for kills in a match (36) versus Clemson on Oct. 2 in Coral Gables. She has collected two of the ACC’s three “20-20” matches on the year, the most recent being a 21-kill, 23-dig match versus Virginia on Nov. 1.

Carico currently ranks eighth all-time at UM for kills (751) and seventh in digs (708).

Overall, the ACC comprised eight of the 12 student-athletes selected to the First- and Second Team in the University Division for District III. Other league schools with student-athletes present on this year’s teams include Duke, Florida State, North Carolina and Virginia.

Miami, Duke and Florida State each had two student-athletes represented on this year’s First- and Second Team.
