Miami Volleyball Blows Past Georgia Tech, 3-1

Atlanta, Ga. – Genny Mayhew touched 20 kills for the first time this season while Ashley Woods added 15 more to push the University of Miami volleyball squad past Georgia Tech, 3-1, Saturday night at O’Keefe Gym in Atlanta, Ga. UM took the match on scores of 25-23, 21-25, 25-19 and 27-25.
After dropping back-to-back Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) matches, Miami (14-2, 3-2 ACC) got back on track Saturday night as three players entered the double-digit kills category while the `Canes as a team collected a .288 hitting percentage (64-19-156).
Mayhew punched up a season-high performance for the Orange and Green with 20 kills to become the second UM player to eclipse the 20-kill plateau this year. Freshman Lane Carico accomplished the feat back on Sept. 25 at Duke when she had 21.
Meanwhile, redshirt senior Ashley Woods matched a career-high with 15 kills on just 25 swings for a .560 clip against the Yellow Jackets. Woods also added four blocks in the road win for the Hurricanes.
Miami took the opening set (25-23) only to find Georgia Tech (11-4, 3-2 ACC) alive and well in the second as the Yellow Jackets evened the score (21-25).
After that point, UM surged out to the third-set win (25-19) before holding off the homestanding Yellow Jackets in the fourth set (27-25).
Georgia Tech hit .244 in the match (59-20-160) while collecting 10 team blocks.
UM countered with 11.5 team blocks and serving up seven aces. Setter Katie Gallagher had three of her own for the Orange and Green.
The third set was, undoubtedly, the most impressive for Miami as they hit .452 with 17 kills (three errors) on 31 swings. Georgia tech was held to just .182 (12-6-33) hitting in the set.
With the win tonight, UM pulls closer in the all-time series; however, Georgia Tech still holds a slight 5-3 advantage. The `Canes had lost three in a row before Saturday night.
The Yellow Jackets were led on the night by Talisa Kellogg with 18 kills as teammate Brittany Roderick assisted with 14. Callie Miller had six blocks and Michelle Kandell led the way on defense with 19 digs.
For the Hurricanes, it was Mayhew’s 18-kill night that led all, as well as Woods’ 15-kill performance. Carico added 13 kills and Gallagher set-up 48 assists.
Carico added 15 digs to notch another double-double, while Mayhew (13 digs) and Gallagher (13 digs) each had double-doubles as well. It’s the first time this season UM has had three players with double-doubles.
Miami finally gets off the road now and enjoys the friendly confines of the James L. Knight Sports Complex on Tuesday night when they step out of conference to battle Florida Atlantic University at 7 p.m.
