Chattanooga, Tenn. – The University of Miami rowing team picked up two top five finishes on Sunday, concluding its action at the Head of the Hooch Regatta on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The Head of the Hooch, one of the largest fall regattas in the nation, is a 5,000 meter (3.1 miles) head race on the Tennessee River ending at Ross’s Landing Park. All boats are started sequentially and will race against the clock.

Miami began the day in Women’s Open 2- action with the duo of Frida Schneider (bow) and Camilla Espana (stroke) collecting a third place finish on a time of 16:24.4. The third place finish was ahead of two-person crews from the University of Texas, Duke and Oklahoma, giving the `Canes a much-needed positive experience in the first weekend of action on the year.

Behind Schneider and Espana for the Hurricanes in the race, securing a 13th place finish, was the team of Tara Eddings (bow) and Sarah Medland (stroke). Together, they crossed the finish line with a time of 16:55.5.

“The second day of racing saw another step forward in the team’s racing performance,” admitted head coach Andrew Carter. “There were some good adjustments overnight, and I was pleased with the progress.”

In the only other race for Miami on Sunday, the Hurricanes took part in the Women’s Open 8+ event, taking home a fifth place finish on a time of 14:57.7. That was ahead of crews from Clemson, Old Dominion and Georgia Tech. The fifth place finish was just one second off a possible fourth place finish behind Tulsa.

The Open 8+ boat was rowed by the team of Katalin Horvath (bow), Natalie Snyder (2), Maria Siemann (3) Theresa Recicar (4), Lauren Cowie (5), Marie Serou (6), Monika Sajincic (7), Hannah McKay (stroke), Heather Hollembeak (cox).

Miami gets back on the water next Sunday, Nov. 15 when the Hurricanes travel to the annual Rivanna Romp Regatta hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. That event will serve as the last fall event of the year for UM.

“We’ve taken some good information away from the weekend and are ready to get back to training in preparation for the next test at Virginia,” continued Carter.
