Lane Carico Tabbed All-America Honorable Mention
Dec. 16, 2009
Tampa, Fla. – For the second time in as many years, Lane Carico of the University of Miami volleyball team has been selected as an honorable mention performer on the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Team, announced Wednesday afternoon in Tampa, Fla.
With back-to-back appearances on the honorable mention list, Carico represents the sixth player for UM volleyball head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch to be named an Honorable Mention performer by the AVCA, joining former UM standouts Karla Johnson and Francheska Savage (2005), Valeria Tipiana (2004) and Leyre Santaella Sante (2003).
A native of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Carico was recently named to the AVCA All-East Region Team – as well as being an All-ACC selection and candidate for conference Player of the Year.
After leading the Atlantic Coast Conference in kills (506) from her outside hitter position, the 5-11 sophomore finished the year with a team-best 4.36 kills per set average while hoisting a .257 clip (506-167-1320). She would go on to finish second on the team in digs (402) and tied for second in service aces (21). Her 506 kills on the year moved her into second place all-time at Miami for kills in a single season.
Carico currently sits seventh all-time at UM for career kills, sporting 875 through two full seasons in Coral Gables.
In helping Miami to its second NCAA Tournament appearance under Lantagne Welch, Carico played her final five sets of the 2009 campaign establishing a new school record for kills in a postseason match with 21 against FIU in the Gainesville Regional.
As a freshman in 2008, Lane Carico was honored as the AVCA East Region Freshman of the Year; selected to the AVCA; All-East Region Second Team; All-ACC Second Team and All-ACC Freshman Team en route to being named ACC Freshman of the Year.
