Bloomington, Ind. – The University of Miami rowing team enjoyed its first official race on Friday, taking part in opening day action of the Dale England Cup in Bloomington, Ind. This year’s race is taking place on Lake Lemon at Riddle Park, and is hosted by Indiana University.

After the opening day, the host Indiana Hoosiers currently have 40 points, followed by Boston University and the University of Central Florida tied for second with 27 points apiece. Miami is currently in third with 11 points, and Dayton is in fourth with nine points.

In novice action to begin the day, Miami came in second behind Indiana with a time of 8:17.2. The Hoosiers took first place in a finishing time of 7:29.1. UM rowed the crew of Alisha Bacchus (coxswain), Carin Mazaira (stroke), Blair Hamrick (7), Brittany Pirie (6), Maria Siemann (5), Taylor Forster (4), Aditi Sharma (3), Marie-Claire Serou (2) and Andrene Reid (bow).

“The novices were pretty good today,” stated UM head rowing coach Andrew Carter. “They were a pretty fresh group, and they really sank their teeth into it for us. They did a great job of executing.”

The next race for the Hurricanes came in varsity Eight action, where UM came in second behind Indiana, taking a time of 7:09.4. The Hoosiers’ first place time crossed at 7:04.1. In that V8+ action, Miami rowed the crew of Kate Rickers (bow), Theresa Recicar (2), Katalin Horvath (3), Molly Thornton (4), Hana Janatova (5), Sarah Medland (6), Monika Sajincic (7), Hannah McKay (stroke) and Christina Crocco (coxswain).

“Overall, I think the regatta went pretty well, as a whole,” expressed Carter. “I’m particularly pleased with the effort from the Varsity Eight crew. It was their first real outing of the year, and it came against very respectable crews, to say the least. I thought they raced respectably, and I’m pleased with the start of the season.”

Miami continues action on Saturday, taking to the waters against UCF in varsity eight and novice eight action. The novice eight crew will also take-off against Indiana in one-race action versus the Hoosiers.

“This regatta has been really well run, and IU has done a great job,” stated Carter. “It’s quite nice to be a part of.”

Day two of the Dale England Cup begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. ET with the first Novice 8 race. The awards ceremony with the presentation of the Cup will be held at 2 p.m. at Riddle Point Park.

“In the morning, we have Boston University, and they posted the fastest time in Varsity Eight today,” said Carter. “They had good races so far this year, and they showed good speed. It’s going to be a tough one. And the second race (novice), we’ll just take on Indiana – since Boston didn’t bring a novice crew.”
