Volleyball Welcomes Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami volleyball team begins its spring schedule on Sat., Mar. 13, playing host to in-state opponent Florida Gulf Coast at 10 a.m., inside the James L. Knight Sports Complex in Coral Gables, Fla. Admission is free.

Under the direction of ninth-year head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch, the Hurricanes are set to compete in four spring events this year, beginning with the one-match slate against FGCU.

The Hurricanes and Eagles met in the season-opener for both squads in 2009 as part of the Hurricane Invitational on Aug. 28. The Hurricanes used three double-digit kill performances from players Genny Mayhew (13), Lane Carico (11) and Lici McGee (10) en route to the 3-0 decision.

After hosting the Eagles, Miami will travel to Houston, Texas for a tournament hosted by Rice University on Sat., Mar. 27. More information on that event, and a complete schedule of matches, will be released next week.

The spring schedule concludes with the annual Fiesta on Siesta Key beach volleyball classic on Sat., Apr. 17. Miami is participating as one of the 22-team field at the Collegiate Beach Volleyball Challenge on Siesta Key, Fla. Others participating in this year’s event include in-state schools such as Florida Gulf Coast, USF, Florida UCF, Stetson, Jacksonville, Florida State, Webber, Florida Atlantic, FIU and Southeastern – as well as a host of others outside the Sunshine State.

The Hurricanes return nine letterwinners from the 2009 campaign, including four starters.
