Over a 16-year collegiate coaching career, Jim Garren has become one of the most respected and successful coaches in college golf combining championship results, with elite player development and program innovation.
Since joining the University of Miami women’s golf program in 2023, Garren has made an immediate impact. The Hurricanes have claimed five team titles, including their most recent No. 1 finish at the White Sands Invitational. Under his guidance the Canes received berths into the 2024 and 2025 NCAA Regional Championships and set multiple program scoring records (team and individual). Prior to his arrival at Miami, Garren served as the head men’s golf coach at Coastal Carolina University, where he led the Chanticleers to a Sun Belt Conference Championship, earned Sun Belt Coach of the Year honors, and guided the program to an NCAA Regional berth. That same year, Coastal recorded six top five finishes, the most in over ten years, initiating a resurgence of the program’s national competitiveness.
Before his head coaching success, Garren was influential in Oklahoma’s rise to national prominence, helping the Sooners capture the 2017 NCAA Men’s National Championship, the 2015 NCAA Regional title, and back-to-back NCAA Match Play Final Eight appearances. His Oklahoma teams produced seven All-Americans, multiple future PGA Tour players, and represented the highest standards of academic and athletic excellence.
Garren also served as Assistant Coach at New Mexico, where the Lobos won the 2014 Mountain West Conference Championship and tied the school record with four tournament wins that season, and at Southern Mississippi, where he helped guide the Golden Eagles to their best conference finish in program history.
