No. 14 Miami Closes Out Regular Season With Another Record-Breaking Day at Lake Wheeler Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. – The 14th-ranked Miami Hurricanes rowing team closed out the regular season with a series of record-breaking performances and strong showings at the Lake Wheeler Invitational on Saturday.

Miami’s first varsity eight crew of Scarlett Pringle, Naroa Zubimendi Varela, Jovana Stanivuk, Samantha Premerl, Mallory Sullivan, Esther Fuerte Chacón, Candela Martínez Pernas, Maria Sole Perugino, and Beatrice Ravini Perelli posted a time of 6:18.81 to earn a first-place finish over No. 15 Alabama, No. 25 Oklahoma, Navy, George Washington, Kansas and Villanova and set a new school record in the process.

The time broke Miami’s previous 1V8 mark of 6:18.9, which the same crew set at last week’s Orlando Invitational. It was also the second-fastest time in the 20-team field at Lake Wheeler behind only No. 8 Virginia.

Like the first varsity eight, the second varsity eight and second varsity four also set new program records in Raleigh.

The 2V8 crew of Anna Langemann, Paula Espinosa Linares, Felipa Rosas Villalobos, Sara Caterisano, Agostina Manzotti Scolari, Kylie Evenson, Jane Elsner, Camila Cofré Lopez and Gabriela Snopková posted a second-place finish with a time of 6:26.01 in its race.

That broke the previous Miami 2V8 record of 6:27.1 which the same crew also set at last week’s Orlando Invitational.

The 2V4 meanwhile, broke its own program record set Friday on Lake Wheeler.

The crew of Gabrielle Walsh, Nicole Wyszynski, Holly Prichard, Isabella Raemisch, and Krista Jackson posted a time of 7:16.10 in its race, besting its earlier mark of 7:16.75.

Overall, the Hurricanes finished either first or second in 11 of their races in Raleigh.

“That was some incredible racing from all of our crews today to end the regatta on a high note,” Miami head coach James Mulcahy said. “Alabama is an excellent program, so for our top two eights to improve their margins to them from last weekend is a good measuring stick of our progress. And very impressive work from our first varsity eight to come away with the victory in a new school-record time. The fours had some really excellent racing, especially with the 2V4 performing heroic finishing sprints in all three races. The 3V8 made some very positive strides forward as well.

“As has been the case all year, we will get back to work, seek improvement, and prepare to go faster yet at the next regatta. That it happens to be the ACC Championships only makes the task at hand more exciting. … Thank you to Duke and UNC for hosting another successful Lake Wheeler Invitational.”

The Hurricanes are set to return to action on May 15 at the ACC Championships.
