Hurricanes Pick Up Three Wins, Set New Program Marks in First Day of Lake Wheeler Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. – The 14^th-ranked Hurricanes opened racing at the Lake Wheeler Invitational with another history-making day on the water.

Miami’s third varsity eight and second varsity four both set new program records and the Hurricanes picked up three wins against the 20-team field on Friday in Raleigh.

The 2V4 crew of Gabrielle Walsh, Nicole Wyszynski, Holly Prichard, Isabella Raemisch, and Krista Jackson picked up Miami’s first win of the day, posting a time of 7:16.75 to beat No. 22 North Carolina, SMU, No. 15 Alabama, Clemson, West Virginia, and Lehigh while breaking their own school record of 7:21.5 set at last week’s Orlando Invitational.

Miami’s 3V8 crew of Loran Graves, Sophia Kovachik, Layla Jolley, Mary Blinn, Lauren Bricca, Ella-Rose Duval, Mia Pappano, Catherine Casey, and Charlotte Maschoff also set a new Miami record during its first race of the day.

The Hurricanes posted a time of 6:44.69, which gave them a second-place finish and broke the program record of 6:48.7 set at last year’s ACC Championships.

Also picking up a win during Friday’s morning session was Miami’s 1V8, which crossed the finish line of its first race with a time of 6:24.62 to best North Carolina, Clemson, SMU, Old Dominion, West Virginia, and Lehigh.

Miami’s 2V8 also won its first race of the day with a time of 6:33.99, which put it ahead of North Carolina, SMU, Clemson, Lehigh, Old Dominion, and West Virginia.

“This was a good day of racing,” Hurricanes head coach James Mulcahy said. “We’ll recover, analyze, and adjust in hopes of improving across the board tomorrow. Really well done to the 2V4 and the 3V8 crews today for setting new program records for their events.”

The Lake Wheeler Invitational is set to conclude on Saturday. Miami’s first race of the day is set for 9:00 a.m. when the 3V8 hits the water.
