Canes Win Three Races on Final Day of Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Miami rowing team closed out its first regatta of the season in impressive fashion with three of the Hurricanes’ five competing boats winning their respective races over a ranked opponent on the final day of the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational.

“We’re proud of the way the team handled their first regatta of the year. Crews improved over the course of their three races and did a great job controlling what they could control and not getting distracted,” said Hurricanes head coach James Mulcahy. “We have a lot of first-years on the squad, so not only was it fantastic to see so many athletes pick up their first wins as Miami Hurricanes, but it was also equally fantastic to see great leadership from the upper classes.”

All three of Miami’s varsity eight crews notched victories Sunday, led by the first varsity eight crew of Scarlett Pringle, Naroa Zubimendi Varela, Jovana Stanivuk, Samantha Premerl, Maria Sole Perugino and Beatrice Ravini Perelli , which posted a time of 6:30.0 in its win over No. 25 Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Wisconsin.

It was the 1V8’s second win of the weekend, following a victory over Alabama, North Carolina and Navy during the final race of Saturday’s afternoon session. The race also marked the second time the Hurricanes posted the fastest overall time of the day.

“There’s still a lot of work to do. Of course, it’s great to see all the hard work we put in is paying off, but we need to stay on the ground,” Stanivuk said. “We need to keep our heads down and to keep working and just stay consistent. The mission is not done yet. This is the first race, and it definitely helps with our confidence because I like to tell my teammates that we need to believe that we belong on top and we belong with those other teams.”

Miami’s 2V8, which featured the crew of Anna Langemann, Paula Espinosa Linares, Felipa Rosas Villalobos, Sara Caterisano, Agostina Manzotti Scolari, Kylie Evenson, Jane Elsner, Camila Cofré Lopez, and Gabriela Snopková, won its first race of the season in dominant fashion with a time of 6:41.2 to beat out Notre Dame, No. 25 Oklahoma, and Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, the 3V8 crew of Loran Graves, Sophia Kovachik, Layla Jolley, Catherine Casey, Charlotte Maschoff, Mary Blinn, Mia Pappano, Ella-Rose Duval and Lauren Bricca opened Sunday’s racing for the Hurricanes with a time of 6:56.1, earning a win over Notre Dame, No. 25 Oklahoma, and Wisconsin.

Both of the varsity four crews earned second-place finishes during Sunday’s racing, with the 2V4 posting a time of 7:32.5, just behind the Sooners’ 7:32.1 in a photo finish.

As successful as the weekend was, though, Miami’s veteran rowers said it was just a starting point to the year.

“I think this was probably one of Miami’s best opening weekends. I’m really proud of this team, from freshmen to seniors. I do think this is just a start though,” Graves said. “We have a lot of work to keep putting in. I think the focus that I saw this weekend shows me how successful we can be the rest of the season. I’m really excited for what’s to come.”

Added Elsner, “I’ve seen everybody work so unbelievably hard. It’s such a reward and it feels amazing to have such an amazing, strong start. But we know what we need to work on and we know how to keep going from here on out and really keep putting in the work and keep the effort as high as we’ve had it so far.”

The Hurricanes will be back in action next Saturday in Fellesmere, Florida where they will race Columbia.
