Diving Adds Three Medals at ACCs
ATLANTA — The University of Miami diving team delivered another impressive day at the ACC Swimming & Diving Championships, with three divers combining to win three medals at the McAuley Aquatic Center.
A day after Chiara Pellacani won gold on the 3-meter and teammate Margo O’Meara took silver, the two Hurricanes switched spots on the podium Monday for the 1-meter springboard.
O’Meara won an ACC gold medal by edging out Pellacani, taking first with a score of 333.45.
In her first year at Miami, O’Meara’s top-scoring dive feature a reverse 1 1/2 somersault from pike on her third effort which scored her 58.80 points. She did not score less than 53 points on any of her six dives in the finals to capture gold.
Pellacani added to her growing trophy cabinet with a second-place showing, finishing less than two points behind O’Meara with a score of 332.20. Pellacani scored 58.50 on her reverse 1 1/2 somersault with 1 1/2 twists, picking up her second medal in as many days.
Veteran Emma Gullstrand was fourth (298.15), finishing just shy of the podium behind third-place Sofia Knight of North Carolina (300.25).
Not to be outdone, freshman Matteo Santoro added another medal in his second day of competition. Santoro, making his ACC Championships debut, was second on the 3-meter springboard (422.80) behind only Max Fowler of Georgia Tech (459.75). He won a bronze medal on the 1-meter Sunday night.
Santoro’s top dive Monday was a reverse 3 1/2 somersault tuck which scored him 84 points. He opened the night’s finals with a forward 2 1/2 somersault with two twists from pike that scored him 81.60.
Teammate Jake Passmore, who also qualified for the night’s finals, finished fourth (373.15).
The ACC Swimming & Diving Championships continue Tuesday from the McAuley Aquatic Center.
