Two School Records Fall in Season Opener

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field team opened the indoor season with two school records and several top-five marks at the Jimmy Carnes Invitational.

Natalie Varela set the tone early as the senior broke the school’s 1000m record with a time of 2:44.90. Gabriella Grissom moved into second on the school’s all-time 1000m list with a time of 2:48.13. Ace Malone broke the program’s 300m record, registering a time of 32.70, just ahead of George Franks, who ran a 32.88, the second-fastest time in school annals.

Sanaa Hebron ran a 37.69 in the women’s 300m to record the program’s second-fastest time as Janay Moorer set the fifth-fastest time at 38.10.

In the men’s 1000m, Prescott Noll clocked a time of 2:29.22 to record the program’s fifth-fastest time. Desmond Coleman registered the fourth-longest throw in program history in the men’s weight throw with a distance of 20.83m, while Heath Vernor improved his fifth-best mark with a throw of 19.79m.

Kennedy Sauder won the men’s high jump with a clearance of 2.05m prior to Miami sweeping the podium in the women’s weight throw as Jocelyn Pringle (20.48m), Tania Da Silva (20.16m) and Calea Jackson (19.60m) finished first, second and third, respectively.

In her first collegiate meet, Dominique Johnson placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 12.85m before the women’s 4x400m relay of Gabriella Grissom, Hebron, Nandy Kihuyu and Moorer finished second with a time of 3:39.17.

Miami returns to action Jan. 30-31 as it travels to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to compete in the Razorback Invitational.
