W. Tennis Falls to No. 17 Cal, 4-2
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team (8-9, 3-5) fell 4-2 to the No. 17 Cal Bears (11-4, 8-0) on Monday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Following a four-hour rain relay that resulted in the match being pushed to the next day, the Hurricanes resumed play and fell just short of the doubles point, followed by only securing two singles wins.
Cal’s No. 12 duo of Jessica Alsola and Mao Mushika took the top court 6-0 over Alexa Noel and Raquel Gonzalez, but Miami bounced back with a 6-1 win from Maria Vargas and Daria Volosova against Lan Mi and Greta Greco Lucchina on court three. Jaquelyn Ogunwale and Aely Arai battled back on court two from a 5-2 deficit to force a tiebreaker but ultimately fell 7-6 (0) to Berta Passola folch and Naomi Xu.
Court two in singles finished first when No. 115 Jessica Alsola defeated No. 109 Gonzalez, 7-5, 6-1, before Greco Lucchina took court five, 6-2, 6-3, over Vargas for the 3-0 Cal lead.
Miami then took back-to-back courts after Volosova secured the 6-4, 6-3 win against Xu and No. 63 Noel took down No. 37 Mushika at the top court. Cal then went on to earn court three for the win as No. 90 Mi grabbed the 7-5, 7-5 win over Ogunwale.
The Hurricanes are back on April 4 and 6 when they host Wake Forest and NC State, respectively, at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
