Hurricanes Finish Strong at Sarasota 2K

SARASOTA, Fla. – Miami rowing completed the Sarasota 2K Saturday afternoon with strong finishes from the second varsity four and third varsity eight.

“As expected, for our first race of the season, there were highs and lows; but, most importantly, every crew now has a more clear picture of what they need to do to be competitive this spring,” said Head Coach James Mulcahy. “We are excited to get back to work and build off of this performance.”

Saturday was highlighted by third-place finishes from the second varsity four and third varsity eight, as each boat earned a bronze medal.

Miami’s second varsity four crossed the finish line with a time of 7:37.88, earning the third-place finish and defeating Kansas, Jackskonville, and Tulsa.

The Hurricanes’ third varsity eight “A” earned a time of 7:01.91 to secure the third-place finish and a bronze medal.

“For a lot of those athletes, this was either their first collegiate 2K race or their first top-three finish at a Division I competition, so that’s a fantastic result for them,” said Mulcahy. “They did a fantastic job of handling the nerves of racing, as well as some tricky weather conditions.”

Miami’s first varsity four placed fourth in their respective race with a time of 7:28.50, while the Canes’ second varsity eight took fifth-place with a time of 6:43.78.

Miami’s first varsity eight finished sixth in their respective final, clocking in at 6:37.01. UM’s third varsity eight “B” crew also placed sixth in their final with a time of 7:25.80.

The Hurricanes will return to competition next weekend, as they are set to host the Miami International Regatta on Saturday, April 5.
