
Hurricanes Earn Back-to-Back Victories over Musketeers
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team (4-5, 1-1 ACC) earned two wins over the Xavier Musketeers (5-8, 0-1 Big East) in a Monday afternoon doubleheader at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Miami won the first match with a 4-0 shutout before taking a 6-1 victory later that night against Xavier.
MATCH 1
The Hurricanes secured the doubles point for the advantage going into singles play, followed by three straight wins for the first win of the day.
Raquel Gonzalez and Xinyi Nong earned the impressive 6-0 shutout over No. 26 Abby Nugent and Clara Owen at the top court, before Jaquelyn Ogunwale and Aely Arai clinched the doubles point, 6-2, over Emily Flowers and Sofia Mazzucato on court three. When the opening point was clinched, Alexa Noel and Maria Paula Vargas led Madeleine Rexroat and Elizabeth Pendergast, 5-3, on court two.
Ogunwale earned the first singles win of the day after a 6-0, 6-3 win over Nugent on court two, followed by an Alexa Noel 6-0, 6-0 shutout against Pendergast at the top court. Gonzalez, ranked No. 95, then clinched the match for Miami after a 6-0, 6-3 win against Rexroat. When play was halted, Arai was up 6-2, 1-2 on Flowers, Nong led Owen 6-2, 5-1 and Vargas was up 6-0, 2-3 on Siminski.
MATCH 2
The Hurricanes secured a hard-fought doubles point for the lead going into singles action, with three quick wins for the second team shutout.
Jaquelyn Ogunwale and Aely Arai took another impressive 6-1 win over Emily Flowers and Sofia Mazzucato on court three, before Raquel Gonzalez and Xinyi Nong clinched the doubles point, 7-5, over No. 26 Abby Nugent and Clara Owen at the top court for two straight ranked wins. Noel and Vargas were tied 5-5 with Pendergast and Rexroat on court two when the point was clinched.
Following a two and half hour weather delay, the singles courts played out on four courts and took the court in order. Noel finished first with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Nugent at the top court, before Gonzalez grabbed another 6-0, 6-3 victory against Rexroat on court three. Nong then clinched the match for Miami after a 6-1, 6-2 win against Smitek. As the match played out, Ogunwale secured the 6-2, 6-4 win over Pendergast, while the Musketeers earned a point following a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 [10-6] win from Flowers over Arai. Volosova then got the 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 [10-8] win over Siminski on court six.
The Hurricanes are back on March 12 to host Penn at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
