No. 25 Miami Posts Top-10 Finish at Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate
NEW ORLEANS – The No. 25-ranked University of Miami golf team closed out the 2019 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Tuesday with a top-10 finish, as freshman Anna Backman ranked among the top 25 individually.
Battling a loaded tournament field that featured eight other teams listed in the top 25 on golfstat.com, and inclement weather, the Hurricanes finished the three-day event in ninth with a score of 907 at the par 72, 6,239-yard English Turn Golf and Country Club.
“Weather was horrible all three days,” Miami head coach Patti Rizzo said. “It was windy on Sunday and then both Monday and Tuesday it was raining along with it being windy and cold. So, not fun. But the field was super strong and we finished in the middle, which we don’t think should affect our ranking. Now, we are looking forward to our next tournament in Florida.”
Ascending 13 spots on the Individual leaderboard, Backman closed out the three-day event with 41 par or better holes and six birdies to card a nine-over 225 and finish tied for 22nd. The Vääksy, Finland, native led the Hurricanes with a two-over-par final day, picking up a pair of birdies on the afternoon.
Joining Backman in the top-30, junior Renate Grimstad finished tied for 29th with a three-day total of 226. Overall, she closed out the tournament with five birdies.
Tying for 50th, sophomore Kristyna Frydlova and junior Macarena Aguilera both posted three-round results of 231, while graduate student Claudia De Antonio finished just a stroke back, 232, and tied for 58th.
Third-ranked Texas earned the tournament crown with a 12-over 876 performance, while Houston’s Leonie Harm and Florida’s Addison Baggarly shared the individual title at even par.
Following an 18-day break from tournament play, the Hurricanes will return to action March 9-10 when they compete in the Sun Trust Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
