No. 25 Miami Opens Play at Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate
NEW ORLEANS – The No. 25-ranked University of Miami golf team opened competition Sunday at the 2019 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate. After one round of play, the Hurricanes sit in a tie for 12th with a score of 300.
The three-day event is being held at the par 72, 6,239-yard English Turn Golf and Country Club.
Junior Renate Grimstad led the way for Miami and is tied for 18th at one-over-par, while sophomore Kristyna Frydlova and freshman Anna Backman both finished the afternoon at two-over, 74, and sit in a tie for 23rd.
Grimstad opened the day strong with three birdies through the first 11 holes, on her way to carding three birdies and 12 par rounds.
After getting off to a rough start with a pair of double-bogeys in the opening six holes, Backman rebounded with back-to-back birdies on her way to posting a team-high four birdies on the afternoon.
Rounding out Miami’s lineup was junior Macarena Aguilera (tied for 74th, 79) and graduate student Claudia De Antonio (tied for 83rd, 81).
Duke’s Ana Belac leads all individuals after she carded a day-one total of 68. Third-ranked Texas holds the team lead thanks to an opening round of 285.
Round two competition begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET. The Hurricanes will open up on hole 10 at 10:40 a.m., when De Antonio tees off. She will be followed by Aguilera at 10:48 a.m., Frydlova at 10:56 a.m., Backman at 11:04 a.m. and Grimstad at 11:12 a.m. The Hurricanes will tee off against student-athletes from North Carolina and Tulane.
