CORAL GABLES, Fla. The season-opening, three-day Miami Fall Invite wrapped up Sunday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

Overall, the Hurricanes finished the weekend with a 13-7 mark in official matches, posting a 10-4 ledger in singles and a 3-3 record in doubles.

“The team fought today. Regardless of the scoreboard, they fought and they are trusting the process,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu said. “I believe in these girls and they are showing signs of listening to get to a higher level of thinking, which, as a coach, I love.”

The Hurricanes narrowly dropped both of their official doubles matches to open the day. First, freshman Lucia Marzal Martinez and senior Daniella Roldan fell, 4-6, to Florida’s Katie Kubicz and Marlee Zein in the B Main Draw third-place match.

In the A Main Draw championship, junior Yuna Ito and sophomore Ulyana Shirokova jumped out to a 3-0 lead on No. 49 Tea Jandric and Sabina Machalova, but the Ole Miss duo rallied back for a 7-6 (7-3) victory.

Additionally, in an unofficial competition, senior Ana Madcur and her teammate from Michigan, Lanie Van Linge, came up on the short end of a 2-6 decision in an out-of-draw matchup with Florida’s Ida Jarlskog and McCartney Kessler.

In singles action, Shirokova and Roldan both fell in their A Main Draw semifinal matchups. The former fell to No. 62 McCartney Kessler of Florida, 2-6, 3-6, while Roldan dropped a 4-6, 1-6 decision against Michigan’s Brienne Minor, ranked No. 119 and the 2017 NCAA Singles Championship winner.

Miami’s only two entrants in the Singles B Main Draw earned berths in the flight final, winning their semifinal affairs by identical scores over players from Michigan just minutes apart.

Ito registered a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Bella Lorenzini and then Madcur took down Patiuk by the same tally to set up a would-be all-Miami championship.

However, neither flight’s single final took place, with Kessler and Minor declared co-champions of the A Main Draw and the Miami duo named co-champions of the B Main Draw.

“Happy for Ana and Yuna to have been able to put three days of good tennis together. It’s what we talk about all the time,” Vallverdu said. “You wake up to do the same thing over and over again, every day, and the motivation has to come from within at every moment in time, in the good days and the bad days. They all have to continue to push towards that every day and we will move in the right direction.”

In the Hurricanes’ last match of the weekend, Marzal Martinez came up just short in both sets against Florida’s Victoria Emma in a 4-6, 5-7 decision.

Miami will host its second and final home tournament of the fall Oct. 12-14 when players from each Division I school in Florida come to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center for the Bedford Cup.
