CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the fifth time in program history, a member of the University of Miami women’s tennis team is the ACC Player of the Year.

Sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba garnered the elite distinction, along with First Team All-ACC recognition, as announced Thursday morning by the conference. Senior Sinead Lohan added a fourth all-conference selection to her impressive resume, as she picked up Second Team All-ACC accolades.

Perez-Somarriba is the fourth Hurricane to earn the prestigious award in Miami’s 14 years in the ACC, joining Megan Bradley (2005), Audra Cohen (2006, 2007) and Bianca Eichkorn (2011). This is also the second year in a row Perez-Somarriba has tabbed a First Team All-ACC selection, joining Duke’s Samantha Harris as the lone players to also make the cut last season.

“Estela’s commitment to her tennis and this program is just phenomenal,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “This young lady is a coach’s dream—respectful, hard-working, accountable and just a beast on the court. Huge congrats to an amazing student-athlete, but we still have a lot of work in front of us.”

A native of Madrid, Perez-Somarriba is in the midst of a dominant spring campaign. She is 24-1 in singles, including 21-1 in dual match play, all at the No. 1 position. Her ledger features a 13-1 record against ranked foes with a 10-0 mark versus top-70 opponents that includes eight top-35 wins and four top-10 triumphs.

Ranked third nationally, Perez-Somarriba has the second-most 2018 wins of anyone in the ACC, one behind Duke’s Meible Chi (25). The 2016-17 ITA All-American and NCAA Singles Championship semifinalist tallied a 13-1 record in ACC play and has dropped just six sets in her 26 overall outings this spring.

In doubles, Perez-Somarriba also played every dual match at the No. 1 position and has two top-20 victories. She is ranked in two separate doubles pairs, placing No. 51 with junior Ana Madcur and No. 68 with junior Daniella Roldan.

Meanwhile, Lohan becomes the third Hurricane to tally four All-ACC honors, joining former teammate Stephanie Wagner (2013-16) and current associate head coach Laura Vallverdu (2007-10). Lohan, one of five four-time honorees recognized this year, was on the second team in 2015, then the first team in both 2016 and 2017.

“Sinead has been a pillar of this program for four years,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “I’m so proud to have had the opportunity to go on this journey with her at Miami.”

Lohan is 18-6 in singles this spring with a 15-6 mark in dual matches, playing at No. 2 in each of them, and she went 10-3 in ACC action. All but three of her victories are in straight sets and she checks in at No. 69 in the Oracle/ITA national rankings.

Adding in the fall campaign, Lohan sports a 27-8 overall mark in 2017-18 with six wins over top-100 foes, including four against top-60 opponents and one versus a top-25 player. A two-time ITA All-American and a 2016 NCAA Singles Championship semifinalist, Lohan has 57 ranked triumphs in her career and finished 41-9 in ACC matches.

The Waterford, Ireland, native is 15-8 this spring in doubles competition. Her 14-6 record in dual matches is the second-best mark on the team and includes a victory over a top-20 duo. She peaked at No. 50 in the doubles rankings with Madcur this season.

Perez-Somarriba, Lohan and No. 16-seed Miami (16-7, 11-3 ACC) begin NCAA Team Championship play May 11 when they host LIU Brooklyn at 2 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
