CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior Dewi Weber will become the first University of Miami golfer to compete in the Arnold Palmer Cup, making her debut in the competition this summer.
A native of Groningen, Netherlands, Weber will compete on the side of the International team, which will consist of 24 golfers from across at least 15 nations. Currently ranked No. 18 nationally, Weber earned one of six women’s rankings selections to book her ticket to the tournament, which will take place July 6-8 at the Evian Resort Golf Club in Evian, France.
“It means a lot to me to be able to represent not only my country but also my school in one of amateur golf’s most prestigious events,” Weber said. “It will be a great honor to play in the spirit of Mr. Palmer, who was one of the best golfers in history and probably the most charismatic one. The Evian golf course is so pretty and I can’t wait to tee it up there in July.”
The International team roster will be finalized within the next six weeks. Two golfers will be added after the R&A Foundation Scholars Tournament (April 2-3) in St. Andrews. On May 4, the coaching staff, composed of head coaches Herb Page (Kent State) and Anne Walker (Stanford), as well as assistant coaches Jan Dowling (Michigan) and Adrien Mork (TCU), will announce their final two picks – one male and one female – on Golf Channel’s Morning Drive.
Weber will be one of two Atlantic Coast Conference representatives in the competition, including No. 24 Jaravee Boonchant of Duke. The Thailand native will also compete on the side of the International team.
Weber has been stellar for Miami both in the fall and in the spring, leading the Hurricanes in five out of seven events since September. She has recorded five top-10 individual finishes and five top-five finishes, including finishing second and first, respectively, as the Canes began spring competitions with back-to-back titles at the Florida Challenge and UCF Challenge.
Last time out, Weber helped Miami to a Hurricane Invitational title on the Hurricanes’ home course at the Biltmore, tying sophomore Renate Grimstad for team-high score of 222.
The Canes will next compete at the Bryan National Championship April 6-8, which will be hosted by Wake Forest in Brown Summit, N.C.
