CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami men’s basketball team travels to Virginia Tech Saturday for a 2 p.m. ACC game at Cassell Coliseum. ESPN has the television broadcast, while the game also streams online through the WatchESPN app. WQAM 560-AM has the local radio broadcast.
At the midway point of the ACC schedule, Miami and Virginia Tech are both 5-4 in the league and locked in a three-way tie with NC State for fifth place in the conference standings.
The Hurricanes (16-5) earned a 69-57 home victory over Pittsburgh Wednesday evening. Lonnie Walker IV scored a team-high 16 points, including his own 7-0 run, after the Hurricanes fell behind by a point midway through the second half. Walker IV is averaging 18.5 points per game in his last six games.
Miami is averaging 74.9 points per game while its opponents average 65.2 points per game. Dewan Huell leads Miami in scoring at 13.4 points per game and also is grabbing 6.9 rebounds per game. Walker is averaging 11.0 points per game this season, including a team-high 14.4 in conference play.
The Hurricanes will be without the services of sophomore guard Bruce Brown Jr., who had surgery Thursday on a left-foot injury and will miss approximately six weeks. Brown is averaging 11.4 points, 7.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. He leads the team in rebounds,
Virginia Tech (16-6) boasts one of the nation’s top offenses. The Hokies rank fourth nationally in field-goal percentage (.513) and 13th in scoring (85.1 points per game) and have five players who average in double figures in scoring, led by Ahmed Hill at 14.4 points per game. He also is shooting a team-high 44.7 percent from 3-point range, while Virginia Tech shoots 40 percent as a team from behind the arc.
Miami leads the series with Virginia Tech, 20-14. The teams split a pair of regular-season games last season, with Virginia Tech earning a 66-61 win on Feb. 27, 2017, in Blacksburg and Miami prevailing 74-68 on Feb. 8 in Coral Gables. Miami is 6-8 all-time against the Hokies at Cassell Coliseum.
Miami returns to its home floor Wednesday, playing Wake Forest at 7 p.m. at the Watsco Center. ESPN2 has the television broadcast.
