CORAL GABLES, Fla. The University of Miami women’s tennis team concluded its opening weekend of play Sunday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

The Hurricanes squared off against Auburn in doubles and Pittsburgh in singles on the final day of the Miami Fall Invite.

“We approached this weekend with a glorified practice mentality and we got exactly that,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “Competitive match play from quality opponents. We showed some real quality signs in doubles. So, all in all, it was a solid weekend.”

The Hurricanes posted a pair of impressive comeback wins in doubles to begin the day. Trailing, 0-4, junior Daniella Roldan and freshman Ulyana Shirokova charged back for a 7-5 triumph over Alannah Griffin and Madeline Meredith to finish the weekend 3-0.

Meanwhile, junior Ana Madcur and sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba fought off deficits of 3-5 and 5-6 to earn a 7-6 (7-1) win versus Jaeda Daniel and Alizee Michaud, the latter of whom is part of the nation’s second-ranked doubles pair. Madcur and Perez-Somarriba finished the event with a 3-0 mark.

Additionally, sophomore Sara Culbertson and freshman Sharon Danquah dropped a 4-6 decision to the Tigers’ Mary Katherine Lewis and Caroline Turner.

Miami then moved on to playing singles, with No. 11 Perez-Somarriba registering the first victory with a stellar performance for her opening singles win of the season. She took the first five and seven of the final games against Luisa Varon in a 6-2, 6-1 decision.

Madcur tallied a come-from-behind victory over Gabriela Rezende, finishing with a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6) triumph. Culbertson also got in the win column by downing Camila Moreno in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Roldan fell to Claudia Bartolomé, 3-6, 6-2, 0-1 (7-10), while Shirokova came up on the short end of a 2-6, 2-6 final against Callie Frey and Danquah was edged by Clara Lucas, 0-6, 4-6.

Overall, Miami went 5-4 on the day after splitting its six singles matches. On the weekend as a whole, the Hurricanes finished 12-8, including 6-3 in doubles play.

The Hurricanes are set to return to the court next weekend, Sept. 29-Oct 1., when they take part in the Bedford Cup in Tampa, Fla.
