CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The draws for the 2017 NCAA Singles Championship were officially released Tuesday morning, as both of Miami’s competitors learned their opponent and start time for the Round of 64.
Freshman Estela Perez-Somarriba will take on No. 64 Ana Oparenovic of Arkansas Wednesday at 8 a.m., while junior Sinead Lohan is set to begin play at 11:30 a.m., against No. 24 Brienne Minor of Michigan.
Both matches were moved up one hour from their originally scheduled start times due to potential rain in the area. Additionally, Perez-Somarriba was initially set to face fourth-ranked and third-seeded Astra Sharma of Vanderbilt, but she withdrew from the field.
This is the second consecutive year Lohan will play Minor in the opening round of the tournament. She won, 6-3, 6-4, last year, just six days after also topping Minor, 6-3, 6-2, in the NCAA Team Championship Sweet 16.
Just twice previously has a Hurricane faced the same opponent in the NCAA Singles Championship in consecutive years. Never before have both matches come in the same round, as will be the case with Lohan and Minor.
Lohan, ranked No. 21 in the country, will be the ninth Hurricane to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship three times. A 2015 quarterfinalist and 2016 semifinalist, Lohan sports a stellar 7-2 record in the competition, good for the fourth-most wins in program history.
Perez-Somarriba, ranked No. 40 nationally, is among 12 freshmen in the NCAA Singles Championship. The Madrid native is a team-best 30-6 this season, including 23-3 in the spring, and will be the third Miami freshman in the last five years to participate in the prestigious tournament.
This is the 15th consecutive year—dating back to head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews‘ second campaign in command—Miami has had a player in the NCAA Singles Championship, including the third straight season with two selections.
