@HurricanesGolf Opens NCAA Competition 12th

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The No. 13-ranked University of Miami women’s golf team opened competition Friday at the NCAA Championship and sit in 12th place. The Hurricanes posted a Day 1 score of 316, while battling rain showers, cool temperatures and strong winds.

On a day where birdies were hard to come by, the Hurricanes made their fair share as they rolled in six on the day, which tied for fourth among the tournament field. Miami also proved to be a consistent group, as it dropped in 49 pars – a figure that tied for fifth in the field.

Freshman Renate Grimstad led the way for the Hurricanes thanks to an opening day score of 77. She currently is tied for 19th and sits just five strokes behind tournament leaders August Kim (Purdue) and Elodie Van Dievoet (Michigan). Grimstad closed out her round on a high note, as she carded four straight pars to finish one over on the back nine.

Sophomore Dewi Weber and senior Delfina Acosta both carded rounds of 79 and are tied for 44th.

The top 15 teams will advance to the fourth round of competition on Monday, following 54 holes of play.

The tournament, hosted by Northern Illinois University, is being held at the par 72, 6,343-yard Rich Harvest Farms Golf Course.

Northwestern holds the team lead with a score of 301.

Miami returns to the course for Round 2 at 9:36 a.m. ET on Saturday.
