CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field team will open February at the Meyo Invitational on the University of Notre Dame campus.
The Hurricanes travel to South Bend, Ind., to compete at one of the top indoor meets in the country this weekend. The action at the Loftus Sports Center begins Friday at 4 p.m., with the women’s pole vault, long jump and weight throw, while the first event on the track is the women’s 60m hurdle preliminaries at 4:30 p.m. Saturday’s events begin with the semi-final of the women’s 60m hurdles at 9:45 a.m., while the women’s triple jump and shot put kick off the field events at 10:30 a.m. The Meyo Invitational will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
Miami’s women’s team enters the weekend ranked 14th in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Women’s National Team Computer Rankings for Indoor Track and Field. The Hurricanes have appeared in each of the three rankings released in 2017, appearing as high as 13th.
The women are led by reigning ACC Women’s Indoor Track Most Outstanding Performer Shakima Wimbley, who’s 400m time of 51.28 seconds ranks first in the NCAA. The senior posted the world-leading time at the weekend’s Rod McCravy Memorial Invitational.
Brittny Ellis and Aiyanna Stiverne also have some of the top 400m times in the country, while the Hurricanes’ 4x400m relay ranks seventh in the NCAA this season. Miami also has standout hurdler Ebony Morrison, sprinter Kristina Knott and multi-events athlete Michelle Atherley contributing to its top 15 ranking.
On the men’s side, the Canes have a quartet of sprinters ranked in the top 20 in the ACC in the 60m. Myles Valentine and Isaiah Taylor are third and fourth, respectively, while Brandon Taylor is eighth and Jaalen Jones in 19th. Henri Delauze is second in the ACC in the 400m, while Miami’s 4x400m relay is third in the conference.
Senior Carlos Mangum is second in the ACC in the weight throw, while Danile Polinski is 10th in the shot put, and sophomore Andreas Christodoulou is among the top heptathletes in the ACC.
Following this weekend’s trip to Notre Dame, the Hurricanes will travel to Clemson for the Tiger Paw Invitational on Feb. 10-11. To view the complete Miami Track and Field schedule for the 2017 season, click here.
