GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Miami swimming team enjoyed a strong performance at the NC State Invite inside the Greensboro Aquatic Center Friday, while the Hurricanes divers posted an impressive first day at the House of Champions meet hosted by IUPUI.
The Hurricane swimmers ended their second day in Greensboro with 337 points, while UM divers earned two third-place finishes on the first day in Indianapolis.
Sophomore Marcela Maric, who competed for her native Croatia at this past summer’s Olympics, posted a score of 301.80 in the 3-meter. Sophomore Briadam Herrera was third in the 1-meter with a score of 406.50 to cap an impressive first day.
Miami’s entry of sophomore Roxanne Yu, senior Julia Schippert, senior Angela Algee and junior Julie Suarez posted a time of 1:43.12 in the 200 medley relay to open the night’s final round.
Algee, who qualified for the “A” final of the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.41 in the morning preliminary round, lowered her time to 53.36 for a fifth-place finish in the top final.
Yu earned a spot in the “D” final of the same event and touched the wall in a time of 57.50. Jessica Hurley (58.40), Iliana Oikonomou (58.48) and Sophia Dal Porto (59.42) also competed in the 100 fly preliminaries.
Suarez was the second Hurricane to qualify for an “A” final Friday after finishing the morning preliminaries in 1:49.08.
Her finals time of 1:48.25 was good for fourth in a talented field.
Schippert earned a berth in the “B” final of the 100 breaststroke with a preliminary time of 1:03.34. As was a common trend Friday night for the Hurricanes, Schippert lowered her time to 1:02.98 to take sixth in the final.
Freshman Chantal Noe’s time of 1:06.77 was third-best in the “D” final of the 100 breast.
Yu’s second event qualification was in the 100 back, where she finished sixth in the “D” final with a time of 56.48.
The Hurricanes ended the night with a time of 7:22.12 in the 800 free relay. Freshman Manon Viguier, Suarez, Algee and sophomore Casarin served as Miami’s “A” entry, while freshman Claire McGinnis, senior Cameron Davis, sophomore Maddie Emery and sophomore Sydney Story – who posted a time of 7:32.26 – were the Hurricanes “B” entry.
The Hurricanes will wrap up their trip to the NC State GAC Invite Saturday, while diving continues Saturday in Indianapolis.
