All-American Monday - Alvaro Fillol

Alvaro Fillol (1975)

Brother of All-American Jaime Fillol and Esteban Fillol and the third member of the Fillol clan to join the Hurricanes, Santiago, Chile native Alvaro Fillol stepped foot on the Coral Gables campus as a member of the 1970 Chilean team which won the South American junior title.

In his first season as a Cane, Fillol posted a 13-5 record in both singles and doubles play. In individual play, Fillol biggest wins of the season came against Adi Kourim (SMU), Rich Hardaway (North Carolina), and Bill Kopecky (Georgia). While partnered with All-American Joaquim Rasgado, Fillol compiled a nine game win streak. In the summer between his freshman and sophomore seasons, Fillol advanced to the fourth round of the National Clay Court Championship and the third round of the National Grass Court Championships.

Building upon both his success as a freshman and his summer experience, Fillol posted an 11-3 singles mark while compiling his second overall nine game win streak in as many years. In the regular season of doubles competition, Fillol posted an 11-2 record and went 2-1 in the NCAA tournament for an overall record of 13-3. Fillol open his regular season of doubles competition with 10 consecutive victories. After earning a first round bye in NCAA doubles play, Fillol advanced to the fourth round of competition.

While compiling an overall singles record of 24-8 and an almost similar doubles record of 26-8 in his first two seasons as a Hurricane, Fillol outdid himself in the 1973-74 season, his junior year. Despite missing seven matches due to an injury in the middle of the season, Fillol posted a perfect 10-0 mark in singles completion while scoring victories over David Dick (Georgia), Dave Bohrnstedt (SMU) and Juan Ortiz (FSU). Fillol matched his singles success with a perfect 10-0 mark in doubles play.

As a senior, Fillol recorded a 20 win season in both singles (25-5) and doubles (27-3) competition. While partnering with three-time All-American John Eagleton, Fillol advanced to the semifinals of the 1975 NCAA tournament. For his success on the court Fillol was selected to the 1975 All-American team.

Fillol would leave the Coral Gables campus with an overall singles mark of 62-14 (.817) and an overall doubles mark of 63-11 (.851). As a pro, Fillol would team up with his brother J. Fillol to capture four of his five doubles titles. Fillol and his brother would be finalists on two other occasions.
