Murielle Ahoure Finishes 12th in WoMen's 200m
RIO DE JANEIRO – University of Miami alumna Murielle Ahoure was among the 24 best women’s 200m sprinters in the world on Tuesday night at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Ahoure, who is representing her native Côte d’Ivoire in Rio, finished fourth in Semifinal 3 of the women’s 200m with a time of 22.59 seconds. The gifted sprinter failed to advance to Wednesday’s final, finishing 12th overall in the event at the 2016 Olympics.
Ahoure’s ascent to the semifinals in the 200m came after a strong showing in the opening round of the event on Monday at Olympic Stadium in Rio. She sprinted down the track to finish second in Heat 8 of the opening round, posting a time of 22.52 seconds that was sixth-fastest in the entire field of 72 competitors.
The former Hurricanes standout opened competition at the 2016 Olympics on Friday, finishing second in Heat 1 in the opening round of the women’s 100m with a time of 11.17 seconds. By finishing in the top two of her heat, Ahoure earned an automatic qualifying spot in Saturday’s semifinal.
She finished fourth in Semifinal 1 and 10th overall in the women’s 100m semifinals with a time of 11.01 seconds. Ahoure ran her best 100m time of the 2016 Olympics, but did not advance to the final.
The appearance in Rio marks Ahoure’s second consecutive Olympics, as she also competed at the 2012 Olympics in London. She was selected to serve as the flag bearer for her native Ivory Coast at the 2016 Opening Ceremonies.
Ahoure, who was the 2009 NCAA Indoor Champion in the 200m, returned to the Olympics after running for Côte d’Ivoire in both the women’s 100m and 200m at the 2012 Summer Games.
