CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the 12th consecutive year, the University of Miami women’s tennis team was tabbed by the NCAA Team Championship selection committee as a top-16 overall seed and will host the first two rounds of the tournament.
Miami (19-5, 12-2 ACC) was announced Tuesday evening as the No. 7 seed in the field, marking its 21st NCAA appearance in a row and its 31st berth in the 35-year NCAA era.
The Hurricanes, also ranked seventh by Oracle/ITA, will be hosting Wichita State, TCU and Quinnipiac at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center, May 13 and 14.
Wichita State, seeded No. 17-32, enters at 27-3 (7-0 MVC) and has won 17 matches in a row. The Shockers check in at No. 28 in the Oracle/ITA rankings and feature one ranked singles player in Gabriela Porubin at No. 94 in the country. They do not have any ranked doubles pairs.
TCU, seeded No. 33-48, is 15-6 (6-3 B12) in 2016 and holds the No. 35 position in the national rankings. The Horned Frogs do not have any singles players in the Oracle/ITA rankings, but the doubles duo of Caroline Wegner and Seda Arantekin comes in at No. 30.
Quinnipiac, seeded No. 49-64, has a 15-10 (7-0 MAAC) record this season and will be Miami’s first round opponent. The Bobcats are not nationally ranked and do not have any ranked individuals, but enter the NCAA Team Championship having won their past seven matches.
Miami enters the NCAA Team Championship with four players in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings: senior Stephanie Wagner at No. 8, sophomore Sinead Lohan at No. 9, sophomore Yolimar Ogando at No. 42 and sophomore Wendy Zhang at No. 70. Ogando has yet to play in 2016 due to injury.
In doubles, Wagner and Zhang form the tenth-ranked duo in the country, while Wagner also pairs with senior Clementina Riobueno at No. 64 nationally.
The Hurricanes have made the NCAA Sweet 16 in each of past 10 years, the fourth-longest streak in Division I, and have won at least one NCAA match in all 14 of head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews’ prior seasons at the helm. Miami is 21-1 all-time at home in the NCAA Team Championship, with 20 consecutive victories.
The No. 7 seed for the Hurricanes is tied for the third-highest position they have received in the past 29 years. This is the seventh time in the past 12 seasons Miami has been seeded in the top 10.
